Own a Piece of the Mobile Civic Center Dance Floor

Steve Joynt is the founder and original publisher of Mobile Mask.

In August 2024, the City of Mobile auctioned off a variety of items from the Civic Center — including lights, tables, chairs, and sections of the dance floor — before the building was demolished.

Steve bid on and won 78 three-by-three-foot sections of the dance floor, the very same floor that hundreds of thousands of Mardi Gras revelers had danced and celebrated on for more than 20 years.

For Steve, saving the dance floor was about preserving a small piece of a place that had been special to so many people and held countless memories for generations of Mobilians.

After winning the floor, Jim Sapser, pictured on the right, helped Steve move the heavy sections to Ron Barrett’s warehouse.

In February 2025, Steve sold nearly all of the three-by-three-foot sections to people throughout Mobile. Many shared stories and memories of the time they had spent celebrating on that very dance floor.

Steve kept several sections that were too damaged or worn to sell whole. Since then, he has been carefully preserving smaller pieces of the beautiful parquet wood from those sections.

Each one is a little piece of Mobile history, carrying with it decades of celebrations, stories, and wonderful memories.
